The University of Toronto Office of International Surgery (OIS) was established in 2000 by the Department of Surgery, University of Toronto to foster surgical education, research and implementation for development. The office is situated within the largest academic Department of Surgery in North America.
The Office of International Surgery is a conceptual innovation that has provided an academic focus on surgical education and research for development both within and beyond the University. The OIS has provided the institutional and financial framework for recruiting medical students, residents, practicing surgeons and ancillary health professionals in surgical education and research for development.
If the greatest challenge to medicine in the 21st century is to find a way to provide an acceptable standard of medical care to the 85% of people who now lack it, the Office of International Surgery is well positioned to provide a part of the solution.

The Branch for International Surgery , at the University of British Columbia is dedicated to advancing surgical care in international health. The Branch forms a broad base of support and champions the emerging concern of international surgery endeavours in three key areas:
Education: In September 2009 the Branch will be offering a groundbreaking accredited, graduate level online course—SURG 510-Surgical Care in International Health. This first-of-its-kind course is an essential foundation to understanding the global burden of unmet surgical need. Course instructors have a long association with UBC and the Branch for International Surgery and have been involved in surgical service, education and capacity building/releasing in low-resource settings of the globe. A Master’s degree in the field of international surgery is currently being developed.
Research & Dialogue: The Branch supports new and innovative research on the burden of surgical care need in low-resource regions of the globe. Annual scholarships for overseas research are available for UBC residents.
The Branch supports dialogue on global surgical care issues through holding three Rounds on International Surgery a year, and hosting and participating in conferences such as the Bethune Roundtable.
Global Engagement: The Branch collaborates with UBC’s Faculty of Medicine to keep an up-to-date inventory of the faculty’s international surgical initiatives. Surgery-related faculty at UBC are now actively engaged in surgical care initiatives in over 30 countries enhancing service, education and research.
The Branch is located in the Department of Surgery, UBC. The Branch is proud to have the distinction of being the first Faculty of Medicine in Canada to have a full-time dedicated Director of Operations.
The Branch’s governance is provided by an Advisory Committee under the leadership of Dr. Robert H. Taylor, MDCM, MIH, DipTM, FRCSC, Clinical Associate Professor, Dept. of Surgery (General Surgery), UBC.
