Oncology Committee
Chair: Dr. Debrah Wirtzfeld
Description: Education of CAGS members through annual CSF meeting, postgraduate courses, development of guidelines regarding training and practice of oncologic surgery (original or based on review of guidelines from other specialty organizations, and in communication with clinical practice Committee), development of outcome measures (in collaboration with CPD Committee), encourages research in surgical oncology, development recommendations for resident education in surgical oncology, frequent interaction with CSSO.
June 2010 - The CAGS Oncology committee meets by teleconference at least once every three months. The focus has been on trying to establish ties between community and academic surgeons in order to improve the care of the cancer patient. The main areas we are working on currently include:
1) developing a national, CAGS endorsed position paper on multi-disciplinary tumor boards. Frances Wright, Ontario, is spearheading this initiative.
2) endorsing synoptic surgical reporting on a National basis for patients with cancer. A CSSO sponsored symposium will be held in conjunction with the 2010 CSF in Quebec City on Saturday, Sept 4 at 10 AM.
3) determining the necessity for National Position paper on access to resources for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients, including rapid diagnostic tools. This is lead by Andy McFadden from Saskatchewan.
4) developing a web based resource for CAGS members that would outline referral possibilities for low volume, complex cases such as sarcoma. The logistics of this approach are being discussed by the committee.
Please email me if you would like to discuss any of these initiatives further or if you would like copies of minutes.
