Residents and Education
March 6th, 2011
CAGS Board Members felt that adding ‘career development and planning’ is important and revised the Resident Mission statement to include career planning:  “CAGS contributes to the content and processes of all General Surgery residency training programs to enhance Residents’ career planning and development.”
There remains a gap in knowledge for Residents going into practice on the management side of the CANMEDS roles, and that CAGS could take on more of a leadership role in this area and also proactively advocating on behalf of Residents.

Short term Goals
1) Host or advertise more management courses that relate back to CANMeds roles, with an emphasis on practice management.
2) Offer information on needs for jobs across country
Long-term Goals
1) Delivery of education – improving simulation, development of acute care surgery curriculum, review RCPSC objectives and examine what is still relevant by the Resident and Post-graduate Committees.
2) Distribute a Needs Assessment for all General Surgeons across Canada through the CPD Committee and include a segment about competency from Residents that can also tie into a Needs Assessment for community surgeons.
